I’m Damion
My name is Damion Bankhead. I’m a wildlife and nature portrait photographer based in Birmingham, AL, and I’m really glad you’re here.
I’ve always seen the world differently. Even as a kid, I was framing things with my hands, drawn to the way light moved through trees or how a moment could feel like something sacred. I didn’t always know it would lead to photography, but looking back, it makes perfect sense.
My love for nature runs deep and now, I spend most of my time out in it, camera in hand, capturing birds at sunrise, still water reflections, and all the little, quiet things that speak louder than words. That one photo of a Carolina Wren on a hike changed everything for me. People connected with it, and suddenly I found myself welcomed into the birding, world. working closely with Alabama Audubon as a VIP guest at different events, building lasting relationships, and using my photography to support conservation.
Since then, my work has won awards and contests and I’ve had the honor of working with multiple conservation companies, serving as a photo guide with an international organization, and having my work published and exhibited in magazines, blogs, websites, and print publications including Amateur Photographer and Alabama the Beautiful.
While wildlife photography is the core of what I do, I also photograph people. Real people in natural settings. My nature portrait sessions are relaxed, real, and rooted in creating something that feels like you. No heavy editing, no stiff posing, just natural light, earth tones, and the power of you feeling seen in nature.
I also lead Walk By Faith Nature Walks, a faith-based experience that combines reflection, photography, and simply slowing down in nature. These walks are personal to me. A space to connect with God, breathe deep, and rediscover peace.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to help people see the beauty in creation, and maybe even in themselves. Whether I’m photographing a rare bird at golden hour or capturing someone choosing themselves again after a hard season, I’m here to tell stories that feel real.
